Many of us dream of our independence. With the ever-changing economy some of us find we have no choice other than self-employment.

Some states have employment assistance programs associated with starting your own business. Offered as an alternative to the usual job search requirements, these programs are directed at job seekers with good skills but a limited market. Washington State, for example, offers a Self Employment Assistance Program.
How do you find a good niche to turn into a marketable, profitable business? There are a million programs and offerings on the internet. A little imagination can take you a long ways in building your own home based business that works. What interests you? What interests others? Look through the paper, not just at the want ads, but the advertisements. See what people are buying. Skim the articles, what are others focusing their time and attention on, and how can you provide a service that is needed and profitable?
The idea is not just finding what others are offering. There is far too much competition in an established market. Its more profitable, and rewarding, to find a unique niche and build upon a solid foundation. You could be the start of the next big franchise business! Study the world around you, and look to your own knowledge and interests. Find something you are passionate about, and take it to the next step by starting your own home based business that works.
